Enjoying A Healthy Life By Eating Healthier

How many times do you have delivered or takeout food in a week? If you have no skills at all in the kitchen and if you are busy balancing a day job and a part time, chances are you live or thrive on fast food for your everyday nourishment.

However, have you ever asked yourself if the food you are eating actually nourishes you, or kills you slowly but surely? Sure it may be filling but that is primarily because it is filled with all the bad stuff you could read right from a cancer guide book.

Seeing one of those bright, shiny signs and the smell of fries may tempt you into buying that disgusting fast food, but instead you should build immunity to its seducing qualities, and focus on consuming more healthy foods.

Just because it is good for you, it does not mean that it will take forever to prepare. There are healthy and easy options out there, you just have to look a bit harder and do some research.

Rather than having that fatty pizza with those extra cheesy crusts, maybe you could get some nice fruit, like bananas, and melons, and kiwi, at your local green grocer and take them with you. The best thing is these options won’t cost as much and are better for you.

In the morning, try cereal or eggs for breakfast. These are extremely easy and quick to make, and you can add an orange or some other type of fruit to the mix if you want.

Dried fruit and nuts are excellent snacks during the day – even popcorn is healthier than chips. These snacking substitutes will hold you over until you can eat an effective, healthy meal.

You can always treat yourself to a junk food binge every so often. Just remember that this is only a treat, not a habit, and to keep it that way.

Baking A Healthier Cake

Healthy cake? This phrase sounds like an contradiction, like “jumbo shrimp”!

We don’t think of cake as healthy. Part of our understanding of cake is that it is slightly sinful for us to eat. It’s a bit decadent, indulgent. We enjoy the flavor and the richness of it, knowing that we cannot indulge often because of the possible negative effects.

If we do hear of a healthy cake, we’re likely to write it off as something that will taste bad, even without trying it first.

Being ‘healthy’ almost ruins a cake, in a way. A healthy cake sounds like something that is a ripoff, a half-dessert half-health food hybrid that just isn’t quite as satisfying.

Since we are unlikely to get over the hurdle of public opinion regarding health foods, instead we’ll try to make cake ‘healthier’ or ‘less unhealthy’ rather than ‘healthy’. Perhaps there will still be room for the expectation of deliciousness.

Most cakes are simple. The cake itself, spongy layers that bake up from flour, eggs, butter, and sugar, and the frosting that tops it. Frosting is usually made from sugar and butter.

How do we adapt a simple dish to make it healthier, but not mess up the taste? By taking small steps. Vegan and health food restaurants have been doing this for some years now, and have started producing cakes that are delicious and rich and more than satisfying for the average sweet tooth.

It’s a matter of taking a few of the least healthy ingredients, and substituting appropriate healthier items. Any recipe for cake can become a ‘healthy cake’ recipe with this technique. Use your favorite cake recipe, and decide ingredient by ingredient where you can make changes.

Don’t try out a new ingredient swap on a night you’ll have guests over, or with a cake you are baking for an event. Sometimes ingredient changes can affect the quality of the cake adversely; it’s better for you to make your mistakes at home and serve only your successes to your guests.

Summer is almost here, which means that people all across the country are celebrating! Actually, in many areas of the country, summer has already arrived. In summer we relax more, have vacation time, take it easy, get some well-deserved rest.

We also tend to get really, really hot in summer. During the summer months, you may feel like you are going to melt into a puddle! There is no reason to suffer constant discomfort while trying to have your summer fun. Keep in mind that cooling is good, and you’ll feel a lot better.

Snacks are good for when you are out and about, so you don’t have to stop what you are doing to eat. Consider getting some good snacks that can help cool you off during summer months. That way the snacks serve two purposes.

Some of these foods are ideal for summer. Don’t let another summer go by without trying these this year.

Frozen yogurt. Frozen yogurt is a big trend this year. It’s not surprising that this treat is so popular. It is not only cooling, it is also delicious and lower-calorie than ice cream. That makes it a popular and healthy snack for cooling you off!

Iced coffee. Coffee is a popular drink in winter, when its warmth is wanted. During the summer months, though, it tends to be less popular. How to get the buzz, without the heat?

Instead, make yourself some iced coffee. You can also make chai tea and serve it over ice, this too will be cooling for you.

Snow cones. If you are at an outdoor concert or fair or festival, keep an eye out for the snow cone vendor. Snow cones are sweet cool treats that are inexpensive and easy to carry while you are walking around. They’re also generally only available in summer, so if you don’t try one now you won’t be able to get one for many more months.

The benefits of good nutrition are manifold, from lowering your chances of heart problems, reducing the instances of cancerous cells, a sharper mind, better retention, and an increase in positivity, all of which will improve your life.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to cut certain foods out of your lifestyle completely. Simply limiting how much you consume of a certain food will certainly go a long way in ensuring you live a well-balanced life.

Chocolate Is Not Only Delicious, It’s Good For Your Health Too

You may feel guilty about your love of chocolate, but the truth is that there are times of the year when we can all indulge in a few pieces of chocolate without feeling ill effects. There’s a saying that nine out of ten people love chocolate, and the tenth person is lying.

Why does chocolate have such a negative reputation as an unhealthy food, and do we really need to feel guilty about eating it? Fortunately, the answer is that it’s not inherently bad for us as we’ve been led to believe. If the chocolate consists of 70% cocoa or higher, it’s actually good for us. However, whether or not it’s truly healthy depends on the quantity and the quality of the chocolate you eat.

There are actually several health benefits of eating chocolate. You may feel like you get a “rush” when eating it, and that feeling isn’t just in your imagination. Chocolate contains a phyto-nutrient that acts as an endorphin in humans, giving us a pleasurable feeling similar to the “runner’s high” that a long-distance runner sometimes feels.

Chocolate can almost be considered antidepressant for its effects on mood, so it’s not surprising that many people reach for a chocolate bar when they’re feeling down. One Swiss study found that those who ate 40g of dark chocolate a day displayed lowered levels of stress hormones in their bloodstreams, making them more resistant to the effects of stress.

There have been many studies conducted on the health benefits of dark chocolate and they’ve turned up some surprising results. One Swedish experiment proved that those who ate chocolate at least twice a week after a heart attack were three times more likely to survive over the following eight-year period.

In addition, a Canadian study showed that risk of stroke was decreased in individuals who ate chocolate once a week in relation to those who didn’t.

The benefits of chocolate come from the flavinoids found in the cocoa. These substances make potent anti-oxidants and have been shown to protect our genetic material from oxidative damage. The result is that chocolate might be considered an anti-aging compound.

So there’s really no need to feel guilty about eating chocolate, whether it’s for Easter or another holiday, or just for any occasion. It’s still necessary to consume chocolate in moderation, however – a bar every day is too much. The most healthy and beneficial kind of chocolate is composed of 70% cocoa, and organic chocolate is great as well if it’s available in your area.
