How To Design A Kitchen Remodelling

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Designing your new kitchen is often the best part of remodeling a kitchen. It can be fun and exhilarating, if you like that sort of thing. It is definitely less difficult work than taking out all the appliances and cupboards; taking out all the crockery and utensils; scraping off the old wallpaper and hacking off the old tiles.

if you do not relish the idea of preparing your own new design for your new kitchen, you could of course hire an interior designer. However, I think that the cooks in the family will have a fairly good picture of what they want and what should go where. Why not have a family brainstorming session on it?

After all, everyone in the family uses the kitchen, even if not everyone in the family can cook. Functionality is the key to most kitchen remodels. As the old saying goes: ‘Form follows function’. This is quite true, the design of your kitchen has to make using the kitchen easier – looking good is also possible, but that has to come second.

Space is a very important element when designing a kitchen or any other room, because it is finite, it is limited. The kitchen is sometimes described as ‘the heart of the home’, but how do you make use of your kitchen? Do you all sit in the kitchen talking? Do you eat there or is it only used for cooking and the occasional cup of coffee with a friend? Do the kids use it a lot? Do you have parties where people tend to gather together in the kitchen? The answers to these questions and others should help you determine how much ground space you have to have.

Storage space is the next deliberation. How much kitchen stuff do you have? Do you have loads of crockery and cooking utensils? Do you have an electrical appliance for every little chore? Do you use them often? Are you happy to have all these things in the back of a cupboard or do you want them left out? If you have children, do they need access to your cupboards or does access have to be controlled?

In conjunction with your requirements for floor space, you now have to work out how many cupboards you want at eye-level and how many at floor level. If your appliances have to be left out, you will need a large work surface. If your shiny copper pots and pans have to be on show, you will need rows of hooks or shelves.

Now you can go on to the kitchen catalogues and choose the design of cupboard doors that you prefer. The actual cupboards are normally all the same, that is they are manufactured to set measurements. Only the door and side panel clip-ons are different. Do you want real or imitation wood? If wood, what type, light or dark? If light, do you want oak, maple or pine?

Then there is the worktop or counter top. Do you want resin, stone or timber? Should it match or contrast with your cupboards? The floor tiling and splash-back tiling comes next. At this point, it is worth looking at the catalogues again and going to a home improvement centre to look at show kitchen examples.

Lighting is quite important. Do you want a light over your table with adjustable spots aimed at your worktop? Do you want to be able to turn down the light? All of them or only the main light? Back-lighting or down-lighting for the worktop is also really nice.

Using Illumination to Fantastic Effect.

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

When you are considering the interior design of a dwelling or room, lighting is most likely the most important aspect of the changes to the interior decoration. After all, it is the element that generates the mood of the room. You can create moods from intimacy to austere clinicism just by the power of your light bulb or turning a dimmer switch.

Nevertheless, if you want to be sure that the consequence of the illumination is the one you are looking for, it is important that you know the four main forms of illumination.

Ambient illumination: This is the general illumination for the whole room. In most rooms it is the average light in the centre of the ceiling be it a fluorescent tube or an incandescent bulb. It is suggested that you make use of one or more dimmers in order to have more flexibility in creating effects for each occasion.

Local lights: These lights are used to supplement or even temporarily take the place of the ambient lighting. Local lights are most frequently standard lamps, table and wall lights and are ordinarily used in order to assist such activities as reading, cooking, and shaving. The concentration of the light is local and it has to be correctly worked out so it won?t put a strain on the eyes.

Accent lights Accent lights are sources of light for displaying attractive items, generally placed so as to emphasize an objet d?art . Quite literally to show it in its best light.

Natural light: This is the one we get free though skylights, windows and doors. This light is controllable for part of the day by shades, curtains, drapes, blinds or awnings, but obviously varies with the time of the day, the season and the weather. Some locations see huge variations in natural light according to the season, eg monsoon, snow, etc.

It is doubtless easiest, if you consider a house room by room. Begin by thinking about what the room is used for. Retirees will probably want to take advantage of the daytime natural light for hobbies and reading, while a working couple with school-age kids, will be more active in the evening, when additional illumination might be more essential. Write down what you do and where you do it. Do you have a favourite comfy chair for reading the paper, do you read the paper during daylight hours or after work? Be daring in your selection of lighting, but also bear in mind that lighting can have a great influence on our perception of dimensions, making a room look larger or smaller than it is in reality.

There are lots of methods to illuminate a room but they all come from one of two perspectives: the lighting is either functional or aesthetic. Yes, they are both used to allow you to see more easily, but highlighting the pages of a book or a shaving mirror is not quite the same as using a soft light to highlight a statue of the Madonna in an alcove.

In a short synopsis, you could use the few lines below to give you starting thoughts when you are considering changing a room?s lighting:

i] Put a standard lamp behind armchairs: they ought to be between three and five feet tall. ii] Use an accent light to high or even low light a work of art. iii] Use an accent light to emphasize the lines of bookshelves. iv] The ambient light ought to be modifiable. v] Use local lighting to swathe the walls with a low light or glow (can be sunk into the floor)

Landscape Lighting Exra-Ordinaire

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

While having a great looking garden is important you will need to consider ways of allowing the beauty of your garden to shine through in various types of weather situations. Some people also like to have the option of having their garden illuminated in the night. For these many people, looking at various landscape lighting options will allow you the opportunity of having your garden looking just the way you want it, no matter what the natural lighting conditions are.

In order to provide the right landscape lighting conditions you will need to choose from a variety of lighting fixtures. These fixtures can be in the form of lamps, lanterns, spotlights, halogen lights and even solar lights. The price of these lighting fixtures differs for each style of light.

If you are planning on using landscape lighting you will have to decide where to place the lights in order to get the best lighting effects. You may also want to consider which lights will shower your garden with an all over lighting. You can look in gardening magazines to get an idea of the many different ways that these landscape lighting fixtures can be utilized.

While it is possible to get ideas for placing landscape lighting in your garden from landscape and gardening magazines, there is another way as well. For this other method, you have to look at your garden in the daytime and in the night time. In the morning you will need to look what spots in your garden would be improved by the use of landscape lighting. When night falls look out at your garden again and see what areas would benefit from the use of lighting.

Then, the morning after this nocturnal inspection, you should go out into the garden and mark out roughly where you think there is a need for lighting. Once you have looked at this area properly, try imagining what sort of lights would be of use. You can then go to the garden store to look for these lights, after you have chosen the kind of landscape lighting.

Then, once you have bought your perfect lights and you have read the instructions on setting them up you will need to start fixing the landscape lighting in a way that will make the maximum out of your garden. You ought to try subtle and strong lighting to decide on the best for your garden. Coloured lighting is a good option too. You could use a dimmer to trial stronger and subtle lighting.

After you have completed your trials and have installed your final lighting, you will see what a difference having the right landscape lighting can make to your garden. From now on, after night falls, you will be able to appreciate the beauty of your garden in a different light.
